  3. Hey Liz,

Another awesome post you have shared. Headlines are very delicate. In fact I remember spending some time when deciding on a headline to give any of my posts. This is very vital because there are headlines that traffic pulling themselves.

I really like your style Liz “Use what’s already out there!”

It’s no secret content are over time recycled and so using this strategy and using well will help to get the work going. Those were all awesome headlines one can start using now to pull in some traffic to our content.

    Great read Liz.

    Have a nice day.

I’ve actually written a few pieces on titles and headlines because it can be such a headache to create good ones. But I’ve quit agonizing because I’ve realized we’ve got headlines out there already that we can use, simply plug in your own topic. You can mix and match as well, it’s kind of like a little game and can be fun.

I’m glad you like them Jackson and hope you can use them.

Have a wonderful rest of the week :-)

    Liz,

This is a nice template for headlines. I really need to print this out and keep it handy in my office.

I think not only is this good for headlines but I think it’s also good for developing content.
So many times I’m stuck trying to think of the topic for a post. I can use this template to plug in some terms and I’m guessing I’ll get some ideas for content out of them as well.

One thing that’s really been turning me off on headlines is when people don’t deliver what their headline is claiming. The worst offenders are the link baiting headlines on Fecebook.

“This baby crawled over to a huge pit bull. What happened next was totally unexpected!” and the video shows a pit bull licking the face of the baby.

It’s gotten tot he point where when I see headlines like that, I just ignore them totally.

I guess if I did do a headline like “The Top Ten Things You MUST Have In Your Camera Bag!” I could use a call to action in the body of the post saying if you think there’s something that should replace one of these ten things, let me know in the comments below to get a dialog started.

My goal is to make my headlines a draw to get people to read my posts but not so blatant that they’re just fabricated fantasy.

    -Kevin

    • Hey Kevin,

You’re right, some headlines are over the top and the pit bull example is a good one. What disturbs me is that the title implies something horrible and people jump right on that to have a look. Says something about human nature doesn’t it?

The fact is writers do whatever it takes to get you to take a look and if it’s deceiving they don’t care. But on the other hand readers are a lot like you they become desensitized to these types of headlines and don’t even look anymore. So you have to be careful and be sure you know your audience.

For me it’s about knowing what my readers want to see and provide the kind of information that helps them. In my business I’m here to help not sensationalize. So to get the attention of my readers I want them to see a benefit from the get go and if you can squeeze that into your headline that’s perfect. But the key is to offer what will interest them first. With so much of the same information out there you need a good ‘hook’ and that’s often the hardest piece of your headline.

Thanks so much for your feedback Kevin. Great to have you here :-) Have a wonderful rest of the week.

      Blessings,

  5. Hi Liz,

The main part of any blog post is the headline. I have read a lot about creating great headlines but after reading this post it seems you have summed up every aspect about writing an effective heading for your blog post.

Bloggers try to attract their readers through making an effective heading which help them a lot. Heading with “how to” is awesome and bloggers try their best to do that. You have explained about many variants here.

    Thanks for writing this article.

Hope you are having fun this week.

Actually I could have gone on to create even more headline ideas but the post would have been really long. Like Mark said I probably could have created an ebook, and maybe some day I will. But for now it’s just an example of headlines folks can use and perhaps it will spark other ideas for readers.

Always a pleasure to have you here commenting Ravi. Have a wonderful rest of the week. :-)

  6. Hey Liz,

Great collection here and great post. Funny enough, I’m working on a guest post that touches on this similar topic but if you know me, I’m one that has to put a creative spin on it. So that’s what I’m going to do.

I like alot of these ideas here and headlines are really important for any blogger, entrepreneur. Mainly because they’re the thing that draws people into the rest of the articles. That’s why those people that write the gossip magazines and Cosmopolitans you find at check out lines, get paid the big bucks. People get drawn in by the headline and impulse buy.

That’s how our headlines have to be as well.

    Great post here.

Which one is your favorite on this list?

Mine is “How to [blank] in [desired time]” because once you have a desired time there, it screams precision. I feel people like to know precisely when something will be done or how long it’ll take.

Anyway, hope you have an awesome upcoming weekend.

    • I don’t know if I have a favorite here Andrew. I guess I use what I think will draw the most interest depending on the topic.

I have found though that if you offer a benefit in the headline it seems to get the most attention. For example, “How to drive farther on less gas” The benefit? Less gas. If you can offer a benefit you’ve got a captive audience — generally. Of course the benefit has to interest your audience. That’s where knowing our audience becomes important as well.

Anyway, glad you found the post useful. I look forward to reading your guest post on headlines :-)

Thanks so much for your feedback Andrew.

These are some great templates you have here for attractive your of your target audience to your blog. There isn’t just one I like. I really like them all and anyone can definitely bring more people to your sites just by using these types of headlines on their blogs!

  8. Hi Liz,

I love this post because it highlights what all great marketers and bloggers do, which is to cultivate what they call a ‘swipe file’, as you’ll know.

These headline template suggestions will definitely be great for anyone’s headline swipe file. As you say, it’s pointless always trying to reinvent the wheel when with some modification and adaptation, a completely new headline can be formed from old structures.

Of course, it’s never good to steal, word for word, someone else’s headline. This would not benefit the stealer anyway as Google will prefer the original and the thief would be caught and shamed.

Great post Liz, it’s reminded me I need to do some brainstorming of new title formats and also look for inspiration elsewhere too.

    • Hey Edward,

Thankyou for stopping by Homenotion. Headlines do make great swipe files and they’re good to keep on hand when you just don’t have any more creativity left to write good ones.

I’ve been known to spend longer on crafting titles and headlines than the blog post itself. I think sometimes I just try to hard or try to be ‘too’ creative and it just leaves me stumped. That’s where the swipe file or a good headline file helps. But as you said it’s not a good thing to steal someone else’s headline but using the same format with a few good adjectives can make all the difference in the world — and you’ll do it a lot faster :-)

Thanks for your great feedback and have a wonderful rest of the day Edward.

  9. Hey Liz,

Excellent tips! I am big on headlines. I know that they can make or break a quality post.

There are just some topics that drive tons of traffic and some that don’t. Even though blog security is important, it will never be as attractive as a post on driving thousands of visitors to your blog type post.

I enjoy taking risk. I have come so much farther by taking some risk with my headlines. I have a good idea of the things that really attract people.

These outlines will come in handy for sure. Sharing now!

In the past I have gone the route of trying to lay out a pattern for good headlines showing how to construct them using descriptive words, including a benefit, etc., but that’s a lot harder than simply giving some examples which I really think is better and easier for my audience. Just pick a headline that you like and insert your topic, easy peasy! I’ve spent hours on headlines that struck a chord but as I said in the post, why reinvent the wheel?

Glad you liked the post Carolyn and I hope this helps you with your headlines.

  11. Hey Liz,

I think I have about 8 or 9 PDF’s, reports and blog posts saved that have these attention grabbing headline examples in them. I remember reading some time ago that we shouldn’t reinvent the wheel, just use what already works. All you have to do is add your own keywords in place of what’s already there. I finally quit beating myself up trying to come up with attention grabbing headlines and I just took their advice.

I love the fill in the blanks and I honestly do just that. Hey, it works right!
