You have access to an endless library including books on HTML, CSS, and Javascript – the building blocks of the web.

If coding is a little bit to far out of your range, the applications of technology have built many different platforms to create professionally designed websites with ease. One of the most prominent, is WordPress. Whatever your idea is for an online business, there is a WordPress theme for  that.

Now that you have a necessary business tool of a website, lets talk about the kind of things you could do online.  Just to be clear, you do NOT need a website to work online.  A website is simply the most common way to have an online presence. There are a number of things that you can do.

A very common theme is to create a gossip, or news blog about campus related events. This is a great way to get other students involved and have a loyal following of fellow classmates. This is just one example. The thing that is really important about creating a website is to solve a problem, perhaps a problem a campus may have.

For example, maybe a shuttle schedule. Maybe fair testimonials about campus housing or the best places to eat, the best deals that a particular bar might have on a certain night, the list of possibilities goes on.

If you can solve a problem, or create something that is contextual value, then after you build traffic you can monetize your site in a number of ways. However, like I said before, you do not need a website to make money online while in college.

The one thing that is true about the internet is that it is growing, at an alarming rate. With all of this growth, websites are going to need content. As a college student, you have access to limitless amounts of knowledge, and writing content is what you do best. Being a freelance writer can be a great way to earn some extra cash in college. It can be a little hard to find work, if you do not  have an online website, or a preexisting online presence.

However, there are a few places that you can look. The first place to look is textbroker.com. Here you can sign up as a writer, and depending on the quality that you provide, you could earn anywhere between $20-30 for around 800 words. You could even contact various websites offering your services, and provide examples.

Doing this can really be hit or miss, but if you can prove yourself as a quality writer, you will eventually find work. Quality content is what drives the web, and that will always be a service that will be needed.

Today people are trying to make a few extra dollars, especially in this economy. Working online has become very popular because of real possibilities for making money.

There are several ways to make money online.  Things like selling your own products, promoting other people’s products, creating information or digital products, blogging, mentoring and many others, but the real success for anyone trying to make money online is to provide useful content  in an area of interest.

But before even getting started making money you’ll need to think carefully about an area of interest you’d like to create an internet business around.

This can be something as generic as cooking, gardening, playing tennis, walking, jogging, whatever it is, think about a topic of interest that you enjoy.

Once you narrow down a topic of interest, narrow that topic down even further if you can.  For instance, you may love walking.  But walking is a fairly broad topic, so instead of trying to capture the broader ‘walking’  market,  a niche like  ‘walking for women over 50′ or ‘walking for weight loss’ will be a smaller niche of the market which eliminates much of the broader competition.

To help you find out if your niche topic of choice will be profitable online, simply check it out by using the Google Keyword tool to get an idea of what people search for.  There’s no magic number of searches  to look for but if you see at least 500-1000 searches a day on your topic of choice, that’s a good indication the topic has interest.

Your research will also tell you what people want to know about your topic of interest.  Doing a search on saving money tips for example, tells me there’s interest in saving money on travel, groceries, energy, water, college, cars, clothes, etc.   These would be all great niche ideas.

Be honest with yourself on how passionate and interested you are with an idea.  In other words, what is your real interest in the business idea you have?  Be honest.

Don’t look at choosing a business idea with dollar sign eyes. Just because it sounds like a money making idea doesn’t mean it will be profitable for you.  Stop and think about how you might view the idea in 2 or 5 years from now.

A case in point was a gentleman I encountered a few years ago. He jumped on the energy bandwagon and created a business around energy efficient fuel thinking it would be a big money maker for him.  After just 2 years he gave up because he actually got tired of the politics and the controversy over the topic.

How much demand really exists for your business idea?  The only way to really find this out is to use a reliable keyword tool.

As an example, let’s say selling designer handbags might be a business idea you really like.  Let’s go to Google’s keyword tool and simply type in ‘designer handbags’.

The results show us that the term itself gets over 400,000 searches a month.   That’s substantial, so there’s potential, but because there are so many searches a month, the idea is popular, meaning you can be fairly sure that the competition is high as well.

For this reason, you will want to drill your idea down so that you can reach more of a ‘niche’ market.  So ask yourself  ‘what about designer handbags’?   If you go back to your keyword research tool you can qualify your idea.

For example, you can drill down your idea with any one of the following:

• Italian designer handbags
• Used designer handbags
• Authentic designer handbags
• Rent designer handbags
• Vintage designer handbags
• French designer handbags

These are smaller niche areas  but they will capture a more focused area of the larger market.  The farther down you can drill in your niche, the more focused your audience will be and the more sales you will make

That’s because the less you can confuse your audience by offering them things they aren’t specifically interested in, the better you will be able to deliver precisely what they want.

Who are Your Competitors?

To make your life easier, and your business more successful, you’ll need to begin analyzing the competition. That means knowing who your competitors are.

In fact it wasn’t until I had my own personal experiences, failures and successes that these 5 success habits of the top online marketers became the habits I regard as some of the most valuable for my own business.

Habit #1.  Find Profitable Niches

You might be thinking, what’s a profitable niche?  Should it be competitive or should it be some micro-niche that has less competition?

Highly competitive niches are actually the most profitable, but that can also mean it’s a more difficult niche to break into and be successful at.

Finding a niche in the market can be a confusing challenge but the goal is not to fear the competition, competition means there’s lots of money to be made.

What you do need to do however, is figure out how you can get your share of the a larger cash pie in a niche that you know, love and enjoy.  That brings us to Habit #2.

Habit #2.  Have a Plan & Take Action

Start with a good plan, not an idea.   There’s a difference.

Don’t get me wrong, you need to start with an idea, but in order to go from an idea to something profitable you need a plan.

For example,  weight loss is a popular and very competitive niche but how can you profit from that niche?

Here are a few things to look at:

• Who is your target audience?  Young, old, men, women, etc
• What type of weight loss niche do you want to be in?  Food, exercise, body building, etc.
• What online business model will you choose?
• How will you monetize your business?
• How much money would you like to make?  Is this intended to replace your day job or is it a financial supplement?

Your plan has to include setting goals.  Start with yearly goals and work down to weekly and daily goals. Each day has to have a set amount of tasks that you will work on in order to fulfill your overall plan.

Next, you must take action.  Don’t be one of those people that knows what to do but doesn’t do it.

It doesn’t help to load up your hard drive with courses, ebooks, ideas and possibilities and then never take action.  If your goal is to write an ebook, do it. If your passion is to write about how to be a better golfer, do it.

Nothing can happen if you don’t get started and do it.

Habit # 3.  Work Your Plan Until it Becomes Profitable

Never abandon what you are doing for something that looks better.

If you’ve created a plan for your business, work that plan until you are successful.  One of the mistakes I made early on in my business was I jumped from one business idea to the next in hopes of finding something just a little bit better, something that would make me money faster or something that was easier. Big mistake.

Several years ago when my first internet business idea didn’t begin earning a thousand dollars a week like I thought it would, I dropped it and started something different.

A thousand dollars a week isn’t unrealistic but making that within just a few weeks of starting out is.   If I had stuck with it, put a firm marketing process in place and worked my plan until it became profitable I would probably still have that business today making much more than $1000 a week with it.

Any top online marketer will tell you not to get distracted.  Don’t follow the next best thing to come along.  Stay with your plan until it becomes profitable.  Jumping over to something else simply puts you farther behind.

Once your online business ideas or model begins earning you a steady income, you can move on to the next thing that strikes your fancy, but not until your current venture become profitable.

• Create membership websites

Habit #4.   Build a Targeted Email List

There’s no successful top online marketer or business owner I know of that doesn’t build an email list.  They all have their own list of targeted prospects.

It’s the first thing I think of when I build a new website or focus on a new niche market because These are the people that are the most interested in what you have to say or offer. If anyone can be compelled to buy, these are those people.

Building a targeted email list is the single best way to build your cash flow for the long haul and it’s one of the easiest and most cost effective things you can do.  In fact once it’s set up, it runs on autopilot bringing in targeted prospects on a daily basis.

I don’t suggest using lead capture or lead generation services.  Instead, create your own opt in email list,  it’s what I personally have had success with because my leads are permission based as well as being highly targeted.   I would  much rather have 100 highly targeted leads than 1000 lukewarm leads, wouldn’t you?

Habit #5.  Become a Pro at Getting Free Visitors

Top online markers know you can’t create a website and expect that visitors will simply appear, because they won’t.

Getting visitors to your site first starts with a couple of basics that includes search engine copywriting and effectively using Google Ranking factors that positively influence your web pages, things like properly using your title and description tags, header tags, anchor text, site speed and so on.

Next, follow these effective strategies for getting free targeted visitors:

• Guest posting on related, authority blogs.  If you have a blog or even a website, getting traffic with guest posting is huge right now and very effective for generating traffic to your site.   Every blogger needs good quality posts and if you can write a guest post that a blog owner can use, both of you  benefit.

• Get set up on Twitter and Facebook and connect with your community.  Social marketing is an awesome way to connect with individuals that are interested in you, but as we all know, the social scene can be time consuming and if used wrong, it can be a time waster.   That’s why I’ve stuck with only Twitter and Facebook.  Connect with your target market by building relationships first.  Here are 114+ ideas on how to use Twitter that aren’t time wasters.

• Write articles and submit them to prime article marketing directories. With the latest Google Farmer update, article marketing directories have taken a slight hit, but that doesn’t mean writing articles is a lost method.  A quality, well written article will always be welcomed by other website owners and for popular newsletters published around the web.

Do you like to take pictures? If you do, I've got eight great ways you can earn money with digital photography.
 
If you're a camera bug and take a lot of pictures, you know how easy digital cameras are to use, they also take much better pictures than even just a few years ago. You can even take a not so great shot and make it perfect just by using a variety of simple software options.

Best of all, pictures can be printed on quality paper on your printer or you could even take it to your favorite camera print shop for just a few cents per picture.

Even memory cards like the flash drive storage medium will allow you to file and save your pictures for sharing on the Internet. That means you can easily upload pictures from the memory card for your friends, family or to your blog or website.

The options for how you could earn money with digital photography are almost endless. So if you're thinking about how you might earn cash for your photos, here are of few of my favorite options…

1. Stock photography. With so many websites online, this business is growing.  There are thousands of website, newsletters, magazines and article publishers who need photos that capture the essence of their articles. It's not terribly convenient for publishes to run out and snap a few pictures every time they need one so if you can provide them with quality business photos they can download instantly, you've got a great business.

Selling stock photographs to businesses and individuals is a convenient service not only for them, it's also a lucrative way for you to earn money as well.

2. Wedding photographer. You don't have to be a professional wedding photographer for this one.  In fact did you know that many modern day brides and grooms are doing away with the formal wedding photos and taking a more cost effective approach by going with the more candid, party snapshots?   With this more informal approach you could be hired to take candid shots before during and after the wedding and reception.  This could be an excellent opportunity for you to take great pictures and organize them into a memory theme that the happy couple will enjoy for the rest of their lives.   

3. Newspaper Shots. If you are in the right place at the right time, you could capture photos that are worthy of being used in the newspaper. When news happens, a newspaper photographer might not be on the scene. If you happen to be there, you can capture the moments and sell them to newspapers. Snapping shots at community events might also earn you some money from local newspapers.

4. Magazine photographer. Create a portfolio of photos that you’ve taken and submit them to magazines.  Looking at your work, they may hire you for assignments. Magazines are a tough market to break into but you could get some great exposure with smaller assignments for local newspapers.

5. Local photography business. Have you ever been on a mailing list that shows houses, motorhomes or cars for sale? Someone had to take those photographs. It could be you. Hire yourself out to area businesses to do the photographs for them.  

6. Personal Event photographer. Many families like to document their events like family reunions, christenings, sports events and birthday parties. You can be the eyes in the room catching candid shots of everyone.  Place an ad in the local newspaper for such an event photographer.  

7. Photography website.  If you know quite a bit about digital photography and cameras try creating a website about how to take professional pictures and how to buy a digital camera.  Along with useful information for new photographers to learn from you caould also sell or promote photography products. Keep visitors and customers coming back with engaging content on various aspects of photography.

8. Teach a photography class. Those cameras look easy to use but some of those symbols can mix people up. Teach others to use their digital camera and create great pictures that they, too, can market as a business. The Google keyword research tools says the keyword phrase 'learn photography gets over 22, 000 requests a day! That tells me that you like photography, you've got the potential for a great new photography business venture. 

There are hundreds of online business ideas that anyone can do on the web.  It starts by first understanding and researching the business ideas you have and then determining what business fits with your talents, lifestyle and goals.

I personally use a combination of business methods that I not only enjoy doing but also give me the flexibility to set my own schedule. That's important. 

Affiliate marketing brings me the majority of my income.  Building sites around niche topics is a favorite past time of mine.  The down side is I will create new sites faster than I can promote them.  This is where planning and scheduling comes in handy.

I start by building a site around a niche topic, I'll then add informative content that my research has shown people want to know about that's related to the niche.  Later I'll complement the site with affiliate products that would interest my readers.

That all might sound simple enough, but to be honest, my first sites were a disaster and the products I chose to promote didn't sell very well either.  It was Rosalind Gardner's Super Affiliate Handbook that set me straight with affiliate marketing.  All I had to do was grasp and practice the strategies that Rosalind demonstrates in her guide and my sites took off.

Another online business idea that's a favorite of mine is creating information products and ebooks. I like to write and share my knowledge with others so writing e-books was an easy fit for me.

Originally I got hooked on this business idea from reading the One Minute Ebook which taught me ropes in step-by-step fashion which is what I needed starting out. I also liked the "do it once and profit forever" concept that having your own e-book brings you.

As far as costs go, unless you have someone write your book for you, it's very cost effective. In fact the PDF software used to create e-books is very inexpensive, in fact I use OpenOffice.org to create my PDF's and it's a completely free download. 

Because I know the potential for writing e-books, I'm probably a little more than passionate when talking with others about it. For example, I talk to people all the time who have tons of knowledge and education in their specific areas of expertise and I'm always baffled by how they keep that knowledge to themselves and never consider letting it earn an income for them.

I know writing isn't for everyone, but because I've experienced the earnings potential writing and selling e-books has, I like to at least get them thinking about it

Who knows, later on I may expand my horizons and experiment with other online business ideas, but so far these have served me well.

That’s one of the things I had my eye on just shortly after I got involved in affiliate marketing. I touched on that a little in my post ‘Promoting Affiliate Products vs. creating your own products‘.

Creating information products, such as ebooks, courses and guides are an ideal way to generate long-term consistent income.

It’s something you do once and can literally reap benefits from it forever.

But that’s not the only reason I like it. Writing your own e-book also provides some pretty nice up front perks such as there’s no inventory to stock, overhead costs are low (no publisher and agent cuts like there are with print books) and because ebooks are electronic, you have an endless supply – but the best part is the income.

Here’s why I say that.

While a tangible book at Amazon.com might sell for $14.95, an e-book on the same subject could sell anywhere from $27- $47 or more online as a digital download.

Just looking at some of  my friends with the talents and hidden knowledge they have, I see so much potential for them to write about what they know.  People would pay good money to know what they know.

But people will often say, “I’m not a writer”. Unfortunately this is what stops most people.

My response to that is “Can you write a letter?  Can you put your thoughts and knowledge down on paper?”

Sure you can. Writing an informational ebook isn’t like writing a novel or a technical guide.  It’s meant to be informative but the more personal knowledge, tips and insightful ideas you can offer, the better.

So how do you create an online business writing ebooks?

As with any successful business there is a process and writing an ebook is no different.

It starts with finding a profitable niche topic, then researching the topic, writing your outline, adding graphics, formatting your ebook, creating your cover graphics, converting it to a PDF and finally promoting it.

That may sound complicated but really, it’s not.  All you really need is a formula to follow and someone to help through each of the steps.

If taken one step at a time, is really can be easy.  In fact an ebook I just recently read from Tiffany Dow called Building an Ebook Empire, covers just those steps. Tiff’s guide walks you through the process of how to accomplish each of the steps and get them done quickly.

The Expectation is Quality over Quantity
