Search Engine Optimization “Good” Practices

by Ms. Liz on July 11, 2008

SEO shouldn't be complicated, in fact digging deep into the bowels of how search engine algorithms work and trying to keep up with changes isn't necessary.

Simply keeping in mind some basic, common sense white-hat SEO practices will take up a lot less time and go a lot farther for helping you gain good search engine reputation and ranking.

Create content and lots of it.
The more pages your site contains with content that is original, useful and current, the better off your site will be. Believe me, content goes a long way in making the search engines very happy.

But also remember to avoid duplicate content and delivering primarily ads.

- Use Internal linking strategies
Internally linking your sites pages is another important strategy for good site optimization.  That's why good site navigation on each page of your site is recommended.

Make good use of link text by using the main keyword phrase of the page you are linking to.

For example, page text that says "click here" won't help with internal linking. Instead use the main keyword phrase for the page you are referring to as the link text.

- Use a keyword density ratio of 1-3%.
If a page has 100 words in total and of those 100 words 3 words are your targeted keywords, then the keyword ratio is 3% (3 divided by 100).

- Use your best keyword phrase wisely
Use your main keyword phrase for each page in the title and the subtitle of your page's content. Additionally be sure to include it in the first paragraph and in the last paragraph of the page.

- Use Accurate Title and Description tags
Each page of your site should contain its own unique title and description tags. Don't duplicate your index page tags throughout your website.

Don't try to place an ad in your title tag. Simply accurately describe what the page is about by using your main keyword or keyword phrase.

- Use headline tags
Make good us of the h1, h2, h3 tags for each of your site's pages by placing your important keywords in those tags.

- Use ALT tags
Make a practice of using alt tags with your graphics to describe the contents of the image. Some search engines index the keywords contained within the tag so include your page’s main keyword in the tag as well.

-Obtain links from relevant pages.
When finding sites for link exchanges, try to get your link displayed on pages that have relevant keywords to yours in the page name.

For example, if you have a dog site, be sure the page your link will be on contains the word 'dog' in the page name.  You will want your link to be placed on page that looks something like this:

http://www.dogsite.com/dog.html  or
http://www.dog-groomers.com/links.html

                not

http://www.jumpingjax.com/link.html  or
http://www.jewelry.com/resource.html

-Create a site map
Use a site builder that automatically creates a site map for you or use the Google sitemaps tool.

-Host your website on a reliable server
This isn't where you want to scrimp and save. Your livelihood depends on a reliable host providing you with 99% or better up time.

- Don't spam the search engines
Spammy and black hat techniques such as cloaking, doorway pages and other clever tricks might be tempting and you might get away with it for awhile but as soon as search engines find (and they will) your site will be banned and recovery can take years.
