Best Web Hosting for Small Business? Hostgator Gets My Thumbs Up!

web hosting for small business

Don’t jump into web hosting for small business without careful consideration.

I’ve had web hosting providers in the past that were unreliable with poor customer service.  I even had one service go out of business on me, so I’m pretty cautious when it comes to finding a hosting service that I can feel comfortable with.

One hosting service recommended to me a few years ago by several colleagues was Hostgator.  Because of my past experiences I’m pretty careful with my choices but after a few weeks of careful shopping around, I went with the Hostgator recommendation and I’ve been extremely pleased with them every since.

For starters the Hostgator pricing is awesome. I currently have 15 domain names on one account with Hostgator and pay less than $10 a month.  It would actually be less than that if I paid for my hosting a year in advance.  Secondly their support has never let me down. They are there whenever I need them and they fix every problem quickly and to my satisfaction.

Signing up with Hostgator

Being a Hostgator customer and supporter I also promote Hostgator through their affiliate program which I especially like because I can offer my followers a discount.  That means that if you sign up for a Hostgator web hosting account simply enter the coupon code ‘homenotion’ in the ‘coupon’ field and get your first month of hosting free.

Why I feel Hostgator as the best web hosting for small business.

Most web hosting services offer similar features but here’s where Hostgator gives the most bang for your buck.

  • Reliable Up time
  • They will transfer your website over – free of charge
  • Fantastico Feature makes it easy to install WordPress & Content management systems
  • They host Unlimited domains, sub-domains, blogs and email addresses
  • Accounts include website statistics using applications like Awstats and Webalizer
  • Free access to Video tutorials and a Getting Started Wizard
  • 24/7 Service & Support with online chat and toll free phone number

Hostgator uses the CPanel function. CPanel means ‘Control Panel’ and allows navigating your web host easy and logical because it has several easy to use tools that will help you perform essential tasks quickly and reliably.  One tool I use quite a bit is the Fantasticol tool that installs a WordPress blog for me in just a few easy clicks.   It’s tools like this that make is super easy if you’re technically challenged, like me :-)

Here’s a glimpse of what the Cpanel looks like.

But it’s not enough to just have a good hosting service, you need reliable support.  That means if you’re working at 2 in the morning and you need help you need to be sure you can get it.  To this day I’ve never had any issues with Hostgator’s support or downtime.  If I ever need help a quick phone call or online chat resolved any problem I’ve ever had.

Which Hostgator Web Hosting Plan is Best for Your Small Business?

I’d recommend starting out with Hostgator’s ‘Baby Plan’ for $7.95 a month, if you pay yearly (it’s 9.95 a month if you pay monthly). You could certainly go with the ‘Hatchling plan’ starting at $4.95 a month but the Baby plan gives you unlimited domains and for just a few dollars more a month you have the flexibility of adding additional domains later on as your small business grows.

Hosting Tip:  Just from experience, I’d strongly recommend obtaining your domain name and your hosting service from separate companies. People using the same company for domain registration and hosting services often have trouble transferring their domain names if they ever need to switch hosting companies.

If you’re just starting out, I recommend getting your domain name first then registering for your hosting account.

Don’t forget, if you decide to go with Hostgator, use my coupon code ‘homenotion’ :-)

P.S. Homenotion is proudly hosted by Hostgator.

I am also both an affiliate and satisfied customer of Hostgator’s web hosting. I earn a commission on my Hostgator referrals which supports the time, money and effort that goes into keeping Homenotion a free site for my readers.

    Hey Liz

    I agree, Hostgator is excellent

Great point that you should use different companies for registering domain names and hosting.

  2. Hey Liz,

Thanks for the great review on HostGator. I’ve heard a lot of good things about them. I’m not with them at the moment, but would jump over in a heart beat if my provider was to go down.

    Take care,

Hey Liz.. I don’t use Hostgator, but I’ve heard really great things about it.. Dreamhost hasn’t done me wrong yet so I’m happy :0)

    talk soon

    • Hi Hector, Yes, I’ve heard good things about Dreamhost as well. There are actually lots of really good hosting companies out there, but because there are so many bad ones you need to go on recommendations, that’s where good reviews and honest opinions help, so thanks!

    Hi Liz,

This is a great review you are sharing here. I have heard great things about HostGator and I will definitely consider them if things go wrong with my current hosting company :)

    Thanks for sharing this.

    All the best,
    Mavis Nong

    • Hey Mavis, that’s exactly what happened to me. My host a few years ago was great for me, the problem was when I needed support for a problem that had come up they fell short. That’s when I was forced to rethink my options. Hostgator’s been a good fit for me ever since and they’ve saved me a ton of money. It’s always good to have a backup should things go south :-)

I have been using a Hostgator for quite some time and have been satisfied. I am in the
process transferring to a new host which is only $50 for unlimited everything.

You do provide great information for something undecided about which hosting company they may want to use.

    Have a great day,
    Tommy D.

This is a GREAT review of Hostgator Liz. I only use them to host my blogs, the domains I buy through GoDaddy.

The other day one of my blogs was “inadvertently” deleted by me when I was loading up a new one that I’m working on. Hostgator had it reinstated in about 12 hours flat, from their database backups they do every sunday.

As far as I’m concerned – they ARE the best!

    • Hey Michael, my experiences are the same. Usually any problems I have I’ve created myself but the response I get in support of fixing those things is outstanding. Thanks for your feedback :-)
