Is Copywriting a Viable Career?

by Ms. Liz on February 17, 2010

If you like to write and you understand the power of words as a sales tool, you might be asking yourself “Is Copywriting a Viable career?”

To put it bluntly Copywriting is not only a viable career, there is a huge demand for good copywriters, particularly as more and more businesses move to the web.

…and at a potential 6 figures a year, the pay’s not to shabby either!

If you’ve ever made a purchase from simply reading a salesletter you know how powerful a sales tool copywriting is.

But the really great news is that copywriters are always in demand, both online and off. In fact thousands of companies set aside millions of dollars each year to pay writers to write simple sales letters like the ones you often receive in the mail and on the web.

There are entrepreneurs, webmasters and publishers making millions selling information, services and products every year and their copywriters are the people responsible for helping them earn those millions.

So it’s no wonder that business owners will pay copywriters 6 figures or more to write copy for them.

But is a Copywriting Career Really for YOU?

Many of us say we want to be our own boss and that working at home is the perfect dream but the truth is many people actually prefer the social 9-5 office atmosphere and are better suited to having their workload scheduled for them.

If that’s what you prefer there’s no shame in that, however, if the hectic office environment and the less than fulfilling work is a constant frustration …and you enjoy writing, then life as a copywriter where you can work when you want and as much as you want, might just be the career change you need …not to mention, it’s the kind of career that most people only dream about because of the high salary it draws.

Of course to e a copywriter, you need to at least enjoy writing.  If you do, I’m happy to tell you that a freelance career in copywriting has the potential for getting you out of the rat race and into something you love doing.

But first, let’s look at some of the things that will help you know if copywriting is a viable career for you:

  • Do you have confidence in yourself and your skills as a writer?
  • Are you comfortable with meeting deadlines?
  • Are you well-organized & flexible with your hours?
  • Do you have a professional demeanor?
  • Are you comfortable with working alone?

Did you answer ‘yes’ to any of these? Good!  For those that you may not be totally sure about don’t worry, as long as these are things that you are willing to work on, then you definitely have potential.

Education needed for a copywriting career

Believe it or not, most freelance copywriters working from home have no more than a high school education.  Copywriting is a skill and skills are meant to be learned.  This is not like writing a novel or being a technical writer.  In fact it’s easier.

The skill of copywriting has several major components that anyone can learn and once you learn those components it’s only a matter of practicing them, and it doesn’t take years to learn them either, you can learn what it takes to be a quality copywriter in just a few short months, or sooner if you want to work at a faster pace.

It is true that “most freelance copywriters working from home have no more than a high school education”. I don’t have a degree and I enjoy working from home.
