How to Start a Home Based Business on the Internet

by Ms. Liz on April 14, 2009

Have you ever thought about starting a home based business on the internet?  If you’re fed up with your job, your boss, the commute, poor pay and all the other non-sense, you’ve probably thought about it a time or two.

With the state of our economy, failing banks and employment uncertainty, having your own internet business could be a great move.

But if you’re like most people, you’re probably not sure about how to get started, what it might cost or even if you have the talent.

Let me just start by saying, anyone can start a good business online. That means it doesn’t matter what you background, education or ideals.  What you do need however is the firm intention, persistence and the drive.  Not everyone has that. Therefore it’s going to be important for you to thoroughly analyze how important the security of your current weekly paycheck is.

While these are important points to consider they are by no means show-stoppers. Nor am I suggesting that you quit your job cold turkey, not at all.  What I am suggesting is that if you plan it out right, you could get started quickly by dedicating a few hours a week and perhaps a few hundred dollars, no it won’t take thousands.

Of course I won’t tell you that with a few clicks of your mouse you’ll be making millions, that’s not real and anyone that suggests that is someone to be wary of, however if you have a realistic approach and realize that with good planning, wise use of your time and using tools and training that are guaranteed, you stand to do pretty well.

Before getting started here are a few important concepts that you’ll want to pay close attention to:

1.  Find someone you trust and listen only to them.  This can be more than one person but don’t get behind the direction of too many people; it can become confusing and overwhelming.  It’s also true that there are many people just interested in selling you their stuff, so you’ll want to carefully choose who is really in a position to help you.

2. Manage Your Time Wisely.  Create a daily, weekly and monthly schedule to map your time wisely.  If you currently work outside the home, this will be important.  You don’t want to find yourself on your computer during all your free time; your enthusiasm will drop off considerably if you do.  It’s best to start by creating solid goals.  What do you want to do, when do you want to have tasks completed and how do you intend to get there.

3. Put in the research up front.  Don’t jump into starting an internet home business with the first idea that comes to mind.  Research carefully the options, there are lots.  There are hundreds of businesses you could start; they vary from selling your own products to selling other people’s products as with affiliate marketing.  There are services you can perform and products you can create, the options are endless.  Start by determining what you know, what you like and what you ultimately think you can do.

4.  Create a website. Ultimately down the road you will need to create a website.  This is not as hard as you may think, but it could be without a little background and training.

Now of course anyone can create a website, website building tools have come a long way and most are very easy to use, the problem most people have is understanding how to build a site that actually draws customers and makes sales.  A word of advice, whatever site builder you use, make sure it comes with advice, tools and the necessary help on how to build a business, not just create a website, very important.

5.  Promoting your business. There are several components to promoting your business and once your website is created it will be your primary focus.  Website promotion includes things like good website optimization (a good site builder will include this) the best marketing strategies, creating visitor relationships and good customer response.

6.  Stay with whatever you are doing until it is profitable.  Don’t jump off your project in mid-stream to chase something you think may be better or more profitable.  Having too many things on your plate is a common mistake online and is a recipe for failure.  Stay focused on the business at hand and make its profitability a priority.

If your dream is to have your own home based business on the internet, now is a great time to get started.  There are great tools, training and lots of support to help you achieve your dreams.  The possibility exists for everyone,  it’s just becomes a matter of doing it.

A very interesting article. From my experience, I think points 2 and 3 are absolutely key to any kind of home business success. Managing time, especially if you’re starting your business whilst still empolyed is so important for success – it’s so easy to get stuck on writing too many emails or spending too much time on the wrong things.

Research will save so much heartache in the long run. A good business idea is essentially useless unless it’s well researched.

These points are a great starting point, thanks!

Staying motivated is very important, the thing I see people struggle with mostly is getting traffic to their websites. I think sometimes it takes time for people to understand what it is they need to do to succeed. Also realize that working from home is like learning to walk you are going to fall down many times before you can walk perfect.

Good point Robert, we can get too concerned with not making a mistake that we end up doing nothing, when in fact making mistakes is how we learn and ultimately succeed. I know that because I’ve made more mistakes that I care to admit to, but I learned a lot from those mistakes. Just don’t make mistakes and not learn from them ;-)
