How to Create A Successful Blog

by Ms. Liz on February 4, 2010

Are you looking for the  secret of how to create a successful blog?

The secret is, there are no secrets, there are just ideas, methods and lots of suggestions.  What works for me may not work for you but with a little focus and some helpful direction, you can certainly find your own secrets to creating a successful blog.

Your blog’s success is dependent on a few important things.  First of all,  understanding what your goals are for your blog.

For example, your purpose for creating a blog might be to complement an existing website, or it could be to help build expertise within your niche, maybe you want to connect and network with colleagues or perhaps make money, whatever it is, if you’re going to the trouble of creating a blog you probably want it to be a successful one.

So how do you create a successful blog?

Typically a successful blog, by most standards, is one that gets lots of traffic, has consistent reader involvement, ranks well in the search engines, and generates sales.

Achieving those things requires more than just putting up a blog and hoping for the best. It’s going to take a little more involvement than that, so here are a few of my observations for what makes a successful blog…

Commit to Creating a Successful Blog

A great start would be to commit to blogging at least a couple of times a week, preferably more.  People like to read content that’s current. If you don’t post regularly, your traffic may lag and your once loyal following may quickly lose interest, besides the more often you post, the more often the spiders will visit your site.

Keep your focus on your Reader

Your posts need to be worthwhile in the eyes of your audience. Fun and interesting is good but informative, enlightening and written with character is even better. Write with emotion and do it well enough that your readers will want to link to you, ping back and leave comments.

Not all of your writing will instill feedback but if you can keep those ideas in mind, they will help inspire you as you write.

Posts need details and specifics.  If you’re providing and information blog don’t just post the ‘whys’ or the ‘what ifs’, include the ‘how tos’. This is where your audience will really engage.

Most importantly, keep the needs of your readers ahead of your own. Have a good understanding of what their interests and problems are and provide content they care about as well as solutions.  If your blog contains ads make sure they are relevant to what your blog is about and don’t let them be the dominating force.

If you’re running out of creative blogging ideas it’s perfectly acceptable to post the occasional personal story about your latest shopping spree, family matters or your vacation plans as a way to connect on a more personal level with your readers, but your readers overall will be most interested in content that relays ideas, tips, and news related to your niche.

The blogs I come back to most often are those where the writer is passionate, where I can learn new strategies, where the writing stirs my own passions and interests and makes me think.

A Blog’s Success Means Doing the Things that Count the most

I could spend all day on my blog without even trying. Spending time looking for creative graphics, finding links, formatting content, placing ads, keeping up with social media, reading feeds, etc., they can all be wasted time and energy if they’re not the things that will benefit your blog the most.

Instead, focus on the actions that bring you the most benefit. For me that’s writing and interacting with readers. I’ll occasionally dabble in those other things as time permits but for the most part if what I’m doing isn’t something that helps my blog grow or bring a financial gain, I’ll pass on it.  Train yourself to stick with the essential tasks that will actually make your blog successful.

In closing, never start a blog with the intention of letting it sit dormant simply hoping that it will be successful. That won’t work.  If you’re going to go through the effort of creating a blog, be prepared to commit yourself to growing the blog, posting often, keeping it updated, and sticking with it.

Food for thought, indeed. I have been looking at the potential of creating a blog and this article has opened my eyes to the amount of dedication required to meet the challenge. Maybe better to postpone the idea until I get enough time to devote sole attention to it.
Many thanks

Like everything else, building a successful blog takes time and effort. One thing I’ve noticed is that when reading blogs, you can definitely tell the difference between those who write about a topic because they want to and those who do it because they think they should (for any reason, maybe economic). Being passionate about a topic will make your blog much more successful, generally speaking.

Thanks for the other tips here.
