A question came up last week about the latest Google algorithm change that they’re calling the ‘Farmer Update’ because it’s mainly directed at websites that farm or scrape content. These are sites that basically have less original content on them.
Here’s what Matt Cutts had to say:
“My post mentioned that “we’re evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content.” That change was approved at our weekly quality launch meeting last Thursday and launched earlier this week.
This was a pretty targeted launch: slightly over 2% of queries change in some way, but less than half a percent of search results change enough that someone might really notice. The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”
There were many websites affected with this change, one of them specifically was ezinearticles.com.
That brings me to my next question, will writing articles continue to be an effective method of promoting?
I personally think it will be, but we may need to rethink our method of transportation, so to speak
In other words, my guess is that guest posting on other blogs or websites may take the place of submitting to article directories, and personally I hope it does.
Guest posting been one of my favorite marketing methods and I’ve talked about it quite a bit over the past few months and with good reason:
- You’ll get more traffic with guest posting because you’ll be exposing your work on high visibility blogs. And the more you guest post the more visible you are. This isn’t just for bloggers, guest posting works for all websites.
- With a good call to action you will boost your subscriber base.
-Your building quality links
- You’ll be expanding your reach because you’ll be in front of audiences that you my not otherwise get in front of.
A good mix of marketing methods is always wise but I think that writing guest blog posts could be one of the smartest, and easiest ways to increase traffic and rankings without worrying about the latest changes to the search engine algorithms.
P.S. Since the new farmer update negatively affected so many websites, room was made for other sites to rise up in the rankings. How has your site fared?

Hi Liz,
farmer update, lol. Well said. Sounds like a fair deal in my ears:”The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”
Guest posting makes perfect sense to me. Isn’t it interesting that it will probably see a boom after this change ?
Good for those who invested in building relationships.
Thanks for sharing your insights.
Take care

Farmer update, we hope it works in our favor. So far no change. But, to keep track of all the web pages and single out which site which copied the content is sounds like too big of task. This can be only done by cloud computing and storing all the webs locally.
Recently we explored one of our competitors site with yahoo site explorer, it has only 3 unique inbound links from (yahoo, mapquest, and yoorlando), but they still show up on the first page of search.
Also, in the same search, a company from california (we are in florida) shows up, because their hosting company is located in orlando! How funny is that?
So, Google has lot to work on before they start worrying about copied content.
Also, we are noticing more inquiries from Bing, there is an underground movement against Google… It’s like the boyfriend you hate, but can’t tell anyone because he is so kool!
I also think Google has a lot of work to do before they get it completely right. Their intent is to deliver quality, unique content but it’s hard to get that right in every instance. With trying to weed out the bad, the good can get dragged down as well
Thanks for your feedback!
Wow Liz, that’s really interesting.
I agree, guest posting is fun, effective and benefits all involved.
I really enjoyed this post. I’ve never been a big article writer, but guest posting, now I do enjoy that.

Hi Liz,
Thanks for this updating on Google. This will affect lots of websites, but not mine I hope, as I write most of its content myself. I have a few articles written by freelancers, however that too is unique content.
As for EzineArticles, when I submit articles to them that I also have on my web pages, I always rewrite those articles (by hand) so that they are unique. I suppose that Google and other search engines will be interested in original stuff that they find on article directories in the future too.
So I will continue writing articles, but I’ll consider spending more time on guest blogging as well.

Hi Liz,
What an interesting read! I know that guest posting is the way to go although I have to admit I have still not done a lot of this yet. Maybe I need to get on with it??
Thanks for the information.

Hey Marcus, with all the writing we already do it can be daunting, but it really is a traffic puller
I’ve noticed recently a small increase in traffic. I have a lot of fresh and original content.
Hi Dave, well there you go! That’s awesome

The update would not affect any site that does not use link farms and link generating software and the like. Sometimes it’s tempering to buy links or outsource the task of link building but the risk is surely not worth the reward.
