I don’t like to load my WordPress blog down with unnecessary plugins, but these are 3 free WordPress plugins that I consider necessary because they protect my blog from intruders and keep it search engine optimized.
Login Lockdown – This plugin will help keep hackers out and give you a little peace of mind. I’ve talked to folks that have had their blogs hacked into and this is the plugin they’ve installed to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
If more than a certain number of login attempts are detected within a certain period of time, the login function is disabled for all requests from that IP.
WP Optimize – You’ll keep your blog optimized and save time with this plugin. With just a few clicks you can remove post revisions, and quickly remove comments in the spam queue, along with unapproved comments.
Yoast’s WordPress SEO Plugin – I use to have the ‘All In One SEO Pack’ installed, but I’ve found the Yoast plugin to be more effective for optimizing my blog posts.
If you go to the Yoast download page for this plugin you’ll see what I mean. There’s a full featured list including a page analysis section that shows you exactly how to best optimize your title, keywords, page URL, and description.
Tip: If you’ve used another SEO plugin before installing Yoast’s plugin, be sure you follow the instructions in the Yoast ‘Import’ section to make sure all your previous posts are populated with the correct SEO data. The instructions are outlined here.
Broken Link Checker – This plugin has been a lifesaver. It checks your posts, pages, comments and other content for broken links and missing images. It notifies me on my dashboard of any broken links I have on my blog. You can also set it up to email you when broken links are found, very useful.
