Facebook Security Checks – Keeping Your Facebook Wall & Fan Page Secure

by Ms. Liz on January 10, 2011

With Facebook's extreme popularity, privacy concerns and security are of the utmost importance.

If you've got a Facebook Wall and Fan page, here's a  Facebook security Checks and checklist for ensuring you and your private information stay secure :-)

Once you have your Facebook account set up, the first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your account’s privacy settings match your expectations and your goals for having the account in the first place.

You’ll want to think about who are the “right” people to be sharing your information with. They are likely to be anyone you want to find information about you or your business.

Setting up Your  Privacy Settings?

After you sign up for a new Facebook account, go to your new account page and click the item that’s entitled “Control what information you share.”  This will provide you with information about your Facebook’s privacy settings.

1. Click “Account” in the blue menu bar in the right top corner of the page.

2. Click “Privacy Settings” from the drop-down menu that appears.

3. Find the link to “Customize settings” and click it.

4. Go to the bottom of the “Things I share” section and find the entry that says “Include me in the ‘People Here Now’ after I check in”.

5. Unclick the box that says “Enable.”

Next Review each of the subcategories in the “Things I Share” section.

1. For each subcategory, decide who you want to be able to see that information, keeping in mind how sharing each type of information will affect your business.  The choices are “Everyone,” “Friends of Friends,” “Friends Only,” and “Customize.”

2. Select “Everyone” if you want to share with the largest possible audience.

3. Select “Friends of Friends” if you want to share with the extended network of people that have some connection to you.

4. Select “Friends Only” if you want the information to be accessible only to people that you actually know and interact with directly.

5. Select “Customize” if you want to be able to identify specific individuals or groups of individuals that will be able to see the specified information.  This section will also allow you to select 'only me'. For example, you may not want anyone to see your birthday ;-)

Next review each of the subcategories in the "Things I share" section.

Again, these are just tips, your settings are your own personal preferences.

- Photos you are “tagged” in – Friends only is advisable

– Your home address – Only you is advisable

- Your home phone number – Only you is advisable

– Your mobile phone number – Only friends is advisable, however this is a personal call.

– Click “Edit album privacy” to limit who can see the photos that you post to your account.

Facebook Groups

If you go to your 'Home' page you will see an option to the left for creating Groups.

If you set up any new Facebook Groups, decide between the three available privacy settings:  “Closed,” “Secret,” and “Open.”

Select “Open” if you want the Group, its membership list and any group content to be accessible to anyone.

– Select “Closed” (this is the default setting”) if you want the existence of the group and its list of members to be public, but content to be accessible only to members.

- Select “Secret” if you don’t even want the existence of the group, or a listing of its members, to be public.

Facebook security best practices overall:

Don’t automatically accept the default Facebook privacy settings.

Review your privacy settings whenever Facebook changes its policy or rolls out a new site-wide feature.

Happy Facebooking :-)

Hi Liz,

Facebook security is a never-ending story, isn’t it ? Your advice is very sound – we want to be as open as possible so that people can find information about us and our business but as private as necessary as well.

If I get a friend request from someone who doesn’t provide any (or hardly any) information about themselves without being friends, I usually decline the friend request.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

Oliver

Hey Oliver, yes, very good advice.

Liz, these are all great points. It’s really important to me to keep my privacy settings safe. There are certainly some things that I am happy to share with everyone but there are plenty of things that I won’t, such as pictures of my kids.

Hey Liz,

Sound advice you are sharing here. I agree with Oliver, Facebook security is an ongoing thing. It’s important to check settings to make sure our info is secure.

Thanks for sharing.

I hate when I visit a fan page on Facebook and see spammy posts about the latest diet trend or whatever it may be. I run a few fan pages I know (even before this article) that you can make some setting adjustments to avoid being the target of spam. Thanks for these easy to follow tips here Liz.

I RT’d for other people to hopefully read this great article.

Hey Liz,

Very important stuff! The general rule seems to be that the default setting, especially with Facebook but other social sites as well, are of the lowest security.

I guess there’s a balance to be found when using Facebook for business and networking since the idea is obviously to be as open as possible. However certain information is still best kept private – address is a good example.

Thanks for the reminder and tips for staying secure.

Hey Liz,

It took me a while to know that I could set my privacy settings to maximize my exposure online.

Wished I had known it earlier. It could certainly have helped.

Facebook is also always changing. So what is available now might not be tomorrow and newer things could be tomorrow. it means we should always be updated.

Thanks for sharing, Liz!

This is what I love about Facebook. They never stop in thinking of ways to delight their users. Security has always been a number one concern on the web.

Hey Tosin, so true, all these tools are like moving targets and you have to stay vigilant about staying secure. Good point, thanks for your feedback :-)

Great tips Liz!

Myself, I do not worry too much about the security settings because I am an open book :)

Hi Peter, I am a little bit of an open book myself, but precautions are good :-)

HI Liz, this post just reminded of something that happened to my friends account the other day.

Somehow someone put on all her friends walls that there was a link where they could get a free ipad.

The think is she didn’t post it and after she erased it it remained on other peoples walls. So you do have to keep an eye on your account.

She is still unsure how it happened.

Thanks for sharing,
Larry

Yikes Larry! Yes, you do have to be vigilante about your security. It’s a little unsettling when you see things happen and you don’t know how to protect yourself. Thanks for your feedback, this may help others – to stay aware if nothing else. Thanks :-)

Good info on facebook privacy. They are constantly changing their settings so it’s always a good idea to go back and see what your settings are and adjust as you see fit.

In our line of work – the networking industry – I have had to adjust some of my settings as I do want it to be easy for people to reach out to me and communicate. But obviously the privacy settings are customizable to our own preferences.

Great writing. Thanks

Very good post. Reminds me to constantly check my privacy settings as facebook is always adapting and changing something. Sometimes things you once had private have changed to the default status.

This is a really good tool to implement as well for families who have children using FACEBOOK – thank God I am not there yet :-)

Recently, we are experimenting with Facebook paid advertisement. We started with CPC but it didn’t work out, now we are trying CPM. The facebook has great tools to target by age, sex, location-cities, intrests, education, married/single etc. It’s really fun to play around with these tools and look at the results.

Well, we did had about 25,000 impressions on average for targeted 50,000 individual profiles; but only 10 clicks in last 5 days.

So we looked to facebook ads reviews; we found that everybody has about same results; advertisers are complaining that facebook users are too, let me say it again facebook users are “TOO” engaged with their walls and messages, that no one clicks on sponsored links.

Facebook is great for users, unfortunately they will not be able to gain much with average advertisers.

Ms. Liz March 10, 2011 at 7:00 am

Good to know. Thanks for your feedback on that. Facebook advertising is still relatively new so I’m guessing that will change with time.
