Create Your Own Opt In Email List

by Ms. Liz on January 28, 2010

If you get traffic to your website but have few sales, it’s time to create your own opt in email list.

Nothing gives you more of an opportunity to boost sales better than capturing your visitors information.

Why?

Because you’ll be able to connect with them regularly,  and that builds trust and loyalty which is a big part of making a sale.  I don’t buy things from sources I don’t trust, and I suspect you don’t either.

Ready to start creating your own opt in email list?  Simply follow along below.

Creating an Opt In List Starts with setting up your autoresponder

Before you can capture your visitors name and email address you have to find an autoresponder service that will capture this information automatically, but an autoresponder will also help you communicate and identify yourself when sending emails.

Resist the temptation of going with a free email autoresponder. I’ve used free autoresponder services in the past and had tons of problems with bounce rates, spam accusations and emails that just didn’t get sent.

I’ve since switched to using Aweber for its quality and service. For $20 a month I can send unlimited emails with low bounce rates, free customer service and I’m protected from spam, something my free services could never do.

Get the Visitor Opt In with a Free Offer

Most visitors to your website won’t sign up without good reason.  So make them an offer they can’t refuse.

This is where value really counts.  Don’t disappoint your visitors by grabbing any old offer you can get your hands on.  Offer something of value.  I create my own free offers and I recommend you do the same thing.

Before you drop your head in despair, hear me out.  Here’s an easy process I use.

Get your hands on private label rights content (PLR) and customize it to your style of writing.  You can purchase a series of PLR articles to create a meaty report or guide, or you can purchase a complete ‘how to’ report.

One thing you must do when you buy PLR content is be sure it has a reputation for quality.  Offering your viewers junk will only tarnish your reputation, in fact you’ll lose subscribers faster than you got them.

If you’d rather create your report completely from scratch yourself but aren’t sure about the best format for writing a report that readers will find useful, I like the method that is outlined in ‘Write That Report‘.  I’ve used the method outlined in this guide over and over to turn out hundreds of reports quickly.  For just $7 it’s been money well spent.

- Turning your reports into a PDF for Free

Once I have my content created I’m ready to turn it into a PDF.   I use Openoffice.org which is a completely free application that includes a PDF maker.

OpenOffice is super simple to use, just open a new file, cut and paste your content into it and press create PDF.  That’s it.

Create Your Opt-In Email Form

Next, you’ll need to create your Opt-in form to place on your website or blog.  Any good autoresponder will come complete with instructions for how to create an opt-in form.

I use Aweber which makes it exceptionally simple  to add a form plus they have lots of pre-made forms that I can choose from, super easy!

You’ll want to add text to your form that will entice your reader to sign up.

For example, ‘Lose weight guide’ won’t get much of a reaction as saying  ‘Lose 10 pounds in 3 days’ will.

Be specific with what you are offering and make it compelling.

Create Your Welcome email

Once your visitor signs up, send them an immediate ‘Welcome’ email.  Use your autoresponder to create your first email and start it off by thanking your subscriber for signing up.  If you promised them an ebook, guide or e-course, include the link for them to download.

If you will be following up with additional email tips be sure you state that in your welcome email and follow that by telling them they can opt-out at any time.  Here’s a simple example that you can customize to suit your audience and your personality:

Welcome Name,

Thank you for requesting my free report.

Here’s the link to your immediate download

—link to your report —-

On occasion I’ll also be sending you valuable
tips that will help you with (name your niche).

Please note that you can opt-out an any time.

If you have questions or need additional
information please let me know.

Warmest Regards,
Your Name
Your website

P.S. I look forward to getting to know you
and hope that I can be a major force in
helping you with (niche ideas).

How To Communicate with your email list

Your subscribers are looking to you for help and useful information on how to do things, fix problems or find solutions.  Don’t violate or take advantage of their trust in you.  Your goals for your email list should be to

  • Over-deliver on your promises
  • Focus on building strong relationships
  • Provide useful information
  • Avoid sales pitches

Keep the communication lines open by allowing your list members to offer feedback and ask questions and, by all means always answer their questions directly.

These are your potential customers, if they trust and like you, they will feel confident in buying from you, but it’s first about building trust  ;-)

Thanks for sharing this informative post. Most people don’t actually comprehend the importance of email marketing yet it is a fact that a well planned effective email marketing campaign can indeed help your company’s products and services gain more visibility.

I never thought of purchasing PLR’s to create a series of emails for my campaigns. That’s exactly what I need to do since I haven’t been communicating with my list for some time. I’ve attracted several subscribers by offering a free ebook but now I know how to continue that open line of communication. Thanks for the great tip!

You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view

I really like when people are expressing their opinion and thought. So I like the way you are writing
