I once read an article that said "Attracting the right people to your website is paramount for increasing conversions. Begin by evaluating your lead sources and determine the alignment of your prospects with your product."
Ok, sounds good but what does that really mean and how do I align my prospects with my products?
What this means is you must must get down and dirty about what your visitors are really looking for. You might think you know what your visitors want but you might surprise yourself if you do a little digging.
Start out by asking yourself, do visitors to your site have a commonality in what they are looking for? Are you perhaps attracting a caliber of people that you're not equipped to serve?
When I started my http://www.homenotion.com/ site I wanted to help people start their own online business, create a web site, advertise, and find tools that would help their business earn more money. I still do that for most of my visitors but what I failed to see was that a lot of people coming to my site who weren't really interested in starting a business; they just wanted to make some fast money on the side.
Once I got the information on my site about earning fast money, I began to increase interest and sales.
Ok, so how do I get the information my visitors are looking for?
1. The best and easiest way I know of is to just ask. You can do this with a survey. Surveys are easy to create and if you use surveymonkey.com it's also free to set up. If phrased and focused correctly you might only need to ask about 10 questions to get a wealth of information that you won't otherwise get. http://www.surveymonkey.com/ has a free service.
2. Catch them as they leave. I'm not a big fan of pop-ins and drop-ins but if you add one to your site upon your visitors leaving and ask what it is they are looking for you could end up with some really cool information that never crossed your mind.
3. If you have a shopping cart and people abandon it in mid-order you can email them and inquire about why they chose not to order and invite them to try again. This method will only work if you are able to capture their email address before they abandoned the order, so keep that in mind.
4. Get on a forum and ask a question. Some forums even have surveys that you can post, make use of them.
I've gotten some of my best ideas and information just by asking.
