Some people say it is impossible to work amicably with a loved one.
Others say they cannot imagine working any other way.
There are plenty of successful businesses owned and run by husband and wife teams, but they’re not all internet based businesses.
So is it possible to work together with your partner in an internet business? And if you try it, do you stand a better chance of success than you would if you were a lone entrepreneur?
How strong is your bedrock?
Let’s face it some couples are stronger than others. If you’ve ever met a couple that’s been together for years, never argue and seem stronger and more in love than ever, you’ll know what I mean. They seem to be made for one another and are capable of handling all kinds of events in their lives, both good and bad. Their relationship is built on solid bedrock and nothing seems to shake it.
Conversely we’ve all met couples who are always bickering and never get on. They argue about anything and everything, whether it is important or not. With this kind of relationship you never know what’s coming next, much less how they’ll handle it.
You can see there is no definitive answer as to whether a couple will or won’t make it as internet entrepreneurs.
The real answer is that it depends on the strength of the couple. If they have the right kind of relationship they stand a much better chance of succeeding as entrepreneurs. But if that strength isn’t there, even the smallest hiccup on their entrepreneurial journey could upset more than just the applecart – it could upset the entire relationship as well.
What do all successful entrepreneurial couples have in common?
There are several traits you’ll find popping up again and again in this situation. If you are considering becoming an internet entrepreneur with your partner, you’ll vastly increase your odds of success if you can tick all these boxes.
The ability to listen and to discuss
The partnership won’t get anywhere unless you plan ahead, listen to each other’s suggestions and opinions and discuss each one in turn.
It’s vital to remember there is no boss – you’re both striking out as entrepreneurs but you’re doing it together. This means you have to respect each other and be able to communicate in a strong and united way.
The ability to plan ahead financially
Are you going to continue working and focus on your entrepreneurial activities on a part time basis in the evenings and at weekends? Will one person leave work to start full time on your own business while the other continues? If so, which partner will take which position?
Financial planning is always important when starting a new business, whether it is based online or otherwise. However money is the stickiest topic of discussion for many couples. Make sure it isn’t sticky for you.
The ability to trust each other
Trust should be the number one priority in every relationship. Sadly this isn’t always the case. If you are going to become internet entrepreneurs together you have to trust in the abilities each of you brings to the table. Perhaps one is better at keeping records, while the other partner is better at the creative side of things.
Whatever business you run online and whatever plans you have for the future they must all be built on trust and the ability to forge ahead together as one unit.
So in answer to the title, yes, couples really can work together as internet entrepreneurs. But it takes a special couple to make it happen.

What an interesting post this is! As per my opinion couples will easily work as internet entrepreneurs if they have good understanding. Online world is all about patience and hard work so if both couples have this ability then they will definitely head their business to the next level of success.

Trust is a must, even when it’s not your spouse that you’re working with. You should learn how to trust the person that runs your business together with you. Trust could help you make decisions a lot faster in such a way that there wouldn’t be that much of an argument on a lighthearted decision making session.
Hi Cindy, Money is always a big one when it comes to relationships and if you run a business together that makes money even more of a central issue, so you really have to be on the same page with your financial goals, but also you can’t let money come between you if there happens to be money tensions, and I think that’s often a big issue for a lot of couples that work together. Great feedback Cindy
This is so true. When my husband and I started our business together, we knew it would be tough. We love each other, but spending 24 hours a day with one another is pretty taxing on any relationship. I think by far the most important thing to consider is your financial goals. If you can’t agree on how and where to make and spend money, it’s going to be a constant battle.
