Today I wanted to share an interesting observation I had when I recently conducted a test on one of my affiliate websites. I have several affiliate marketing sites and some of them do better than others but one site in particular brings me a fair amount of Google Adsense clicks. I love the extra income I get from Adsense but the downside is I don't make many affiliate sales on the site.
Through my testing I discovered that the ad that was getting the most clicks was the link unit ad I placed in the upper left hand corner of my navigation bar. Those ads gave me tons of Adsense clicks but since those ads take my visitors off my site I was destined to sacrifice any new sales.
In an effort to improve things I decided to take the link ad unit off the site. It was a brave move since I make a fair income from those ads; however it proved positive because not long after removing the ads I started making more sales!
That may seem obvious since Google Adsense ads actually take visitors off your site, but what I've discovered is that not all the ads needed to come off my site in order to help increase sales. Keeping the ads on the other sections of my home page still brought in Adsense income, it was just less; in fact last month my Adsense income was about $100 less. The upside is I made about 30% more in affiliate sales and that more than made up for my Adsense loss.
Of course what works for me may not work for you so do you'll have to do your own testing, but if you're experiencing few sales and have AdSense ads on your home page consider taking them off for a week or so and see what happens, if it doesn't make a difference in the number of sales you generate then put the ads back, however it may be worth some testing just to see.
