Don't make the mistake of using Contextual links that say 'click here' or 'click here for more info', these aren't relevant phrases. A 'click here' link in the right context does entice readers to click but this isn't making the best use of your best keywords meaning a good contextual link should include your best keyword phrase.
Here's a better example, 'click here for more info on our travel package to Jamaica' or 'click here for how to train your dog in 3 days'. You don't necessarily have to make the whole phrase a link, you could only make the keywords themselves the link, it's up to you, both work fine.
Also remember that using a keyword phrase link is particularly important if you are linking to another page on your site. This internal linking helps build link juice within your website. Likewise when you place links on other sites, in articles, posts, forums, etc. these work as one way links so again, remember to include your best keywords in those links as well.
When applying this strategy for internal linking on my website, I like to keep my links and phrases as clean as possible by using the 'exact' keyword phrase in 4 key positions of my site:
- On my navigation bar
– The title of my page
– Within the first paragraph of my page
– As the name of the page, for example: www.yoursite.com/keyword-phrase.html
– Include the keyword phrase link on at least 3 other pages of your website. It may not be possible to include cross linking for all your site pages, however locate your best sales pages and focus primarily on them.
Of course don't forget that the effectiveness of this strategy depends a lot on the popularity of the keyword phrase. The more competitive the keywords, the less likely you will show up in the search engine results for those keywords, however if you've got a good keyword phrase with a high keyword effectiveness index (KEI) using these methods can prove very effective.
That brings us back to why careful keyword research is so powerful and extremely important when it comes to ranking well in the search engines.
