6 Copywriting Tips for Persuading Customers

Copywriting is a skill which all internet marketers need to have under their belts. Think about that, an online marketer primarily communicates through words – if your words don't effectively convey your message and persuade your customers to buy, you won't be a selling much.

Here are 6 copywriting tips that will help you write persuasive copy that will help turn more visitors into customers.

Know your Target Market – Good copywriters know exactly who they’re writing for before they begin writing.  They speak directly to ONE person and keep that same person in mind at all times.  If you try to reach too many people with your copy you’ll end up missing your target altogether and not reaching anyone at all.

Before starting, know exactly who you’re writing your copy for and keep them pictured in your mind at all times.

Use Headlines that Grab Attention – If your headline doesn't grab your reader's attention they'll stop reading. Your copy's main headline should be in bold and large letters as an eye catching effect but the words must also convey benefit, excitement, intrigue. Here are some examples:

Focus on positive results:
 -  Tighter Abs in 10 days
 -  Smoother skin in 30 days

Round up your audience – great for target marketing:
 -  Calling all Senior Citizens
 -  Who has Sore Feet?
 -  Attention all Moms

Promise a benefit:
 - Backache relief – Sleep better tonight
 - Cloud nine walking Shoes – No more foot pain
 - Acne Cure – No more embarrassing Moments

Don’t use Big Words – Online writing is different from the writing you did in English class. Write casually and with a clear purpose. Write as though you are speaking to someone sitting next to you or chatting over a coffee. Stay away from big words and long adjectives or risk boring, even losing your readers.

Be Persuasive – If you love your product, that’s great but you are biased.  Your customers want to hear from unbiased people who have used your product.  Include customer testimonials that include the person’s full name, city, state, website URL and if possible a picture of that person.  The more information your testimonial includes the more persuasive and believable it will be.

It’s not about you – Effective copywriting is concerned with the needs of the customer.  The writer doesn’t really matter. Of course, it's ok to add a little personal information about yourself in order to promote trust but your overall copy has to convey a very clear message that you are about helping them.

A good test is to skim through your copy, does it contain a lot of “I’s”? If so then it’s time for a serious re-write.  Go back and change the “I’s” to “You’s”. Don't focus on what you want to say, focus on the interests of the person reading your copy and say things that relate to them.

Use a call to action – Finally, tell your readers what you want them to do.  If you want them to subscribe to your newsletter, say it but also include your benefit. For example, “Click here to learn how you can lose those last 10 pounds and keep it off for good”.  Be precise in your wording and direct them where you want them to go.
