Commit to your Business, Don't let it commit
you!
Starting an online business can be difficult despite
popular opinion. It might be a bit cheaper and it might seem a
bit easier but there's a lot to do and a lot to
learn.
If you're like most you're probably also holding down a
day job and have a family. It's not an easy task no
matter what they say.
However, if you're determined to get a business off the
ground amidst all your other responsibilities you must adhere
to some guidelines. Time is your most valuable commodity and
you must use it well. There will be a few sacrifices
but those, my friends, are the cost of doing
business.
Make up your mind to make a 2-4 year commitment to working
at your business and learning all that you can. If you
have a goal to be successful, you will! But don't attempt
the easy way out you will only be disappointed.
Here's a few suggestions on what you can do to stay sane
and focused. You will be surprised at how these
simple tips will keep you motivated and keep you from
burning out.
- Write down your goals Spend an evening
and just focus on why you'd like to have your own
business. Is it freedom from the boss, more money,
freedom to choose your hours, make decisions or all of the
above. If you are unhappy in your situation currently, think
about what it is you are dissatisfied with.
Then think about what your long term goals are. What kind
of money would you ultimately like to make? Think about
the 'things' you'd like to have. A large home, an
expensive sports car. Really put yourself into your
thoughts. How would you look in that fancy sports car or large
home. What kind of schools would your kids be going
to? What kinds of things could you do for your
family? How could you make their lives better.
Once you've established these thoughts in your mind keep
focused on those thoughts constantly.
- Get and stay organized
Stay organized. This is key to not becoming
overwhelmed. If you're on your computer a lot, keep
your files organized and easy to find. Set up file
folders in your file cabinet for vendors you do business
with. Structure your papers so you can easily find things.
- Structure your time If you already
work a full time job it is important to structure your
time wisely to avoid burnout. If you like to watch TV
you're going to have to minimize it but don't rule it out
completely. Select the top 2 or 3 programs that you
enjoy watching the most and allot time for those programs
each week.
At the beginning of each week write down all the tasks
you expect to accomplish for the week. If possible,
allot one or two goals per day. When going to work start
with the goal allotted for that day. Leave your email
correspondence for last. Sometimes reading emails can be a
distraction and can waste valuable time you need to
achieving your daily goals.
- Give yourself a break
Even God gave himself one day of rest when creating the
universe, and you need to do the same. Even if it's
half a day, you must get away and have some time to
yourself. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of
working your business but your thoughts are much clearer
if you can clear your head once in awhile.
Don't let the computer dominate you. I, myself find it easy
to sit at the computer for hours and just drone on until
my mind starts to melt. Avoid this at all cost. Set
an alarm if you have to but get up and move around. Taking
your mind off your work for a few moments can have an amazing
effect on how you move forward. Try it!
- Find an ebook that motivates you and reference it
often
There are lots of great ebooks out there and it's important
to find one that interests you. Once you find one,
put it on your desktop and reference it often.
The internet can make you feel isolated and it's difficult
to find motivation. You will have to become your own
motivation. Do this by finding someone or something that
lights a spark for you. Read their words often and write them
emails if necessary.
- Stay Focused on your
goals Remember those goals we touched
on in the beginning? Stay focused on them as well. Look
at them often. I've known people that wrote them up in
big black letters and laminated them on their
wall.
